Nursing. That brings me to my next talk that helped me change. Or try to. Pres. Monson spoke about gratitude and thinking about blessings instead of thinking about all that we don't have. That really hit me. This week, nursing has seemed all consuming. Like that is my whole life and I was getting really depressed/frustrated realizing this was going to be my whole life for the next year. I was complaining about it a lot to Greg and when I heard Pres. Monson's talk I realized, "Wo Megan! Last week you were crying your eyes out because you thought you couldn't nurse Scarlet at all. What is your problem?" Big wake up call. I need to change my attitude and be grateful for all that I have. I was just really grateful for those talks. I needed them to push me in a better direction.
Motherhood. I just don't know what to say. You think you know what you're getting into. You know you're going to have sleepless nights. You know your baby is going to cry, but until it happens, you just don't know what it's going to be like. I had no idea I could function on such little sleep. There must be some hormone that's making it this way, because if I ever got less than 8 hours in the past I was HORRIBLE to be around. I'm not always peaches and cream, but I'm FAR better than I ever thought I would be on 5 hours a night, every stinkin' night. It's so annoying, because everytime Greg or ANYBODY complains about how tired they are, or how they didn't get any sleep one night- I just roll my eyes inside and think, "Are you kidding me? YOU'RE tired? Do you understand how little sleep I've gotten EVERY NIGHT for 30+ days in a row? DON'T whine to ME about it!" I've finally gotten over it, but it used to REALLY bug me.
Poor little Scarlet. I never realized how TRAUMATIC pooping was for a little child. It really is intense. Her poor little faces scrunches up and gets all red and she just SCREAMS!!!! She does not have that little infant cry. That lasted maybe 2 weeks. 3 at the most. She SCREAMS LOUD. She is STRONG. I have never had to worry about her head falling back. I keep my hands there and support a BIT, but I'm really lazy about it, because it's not really necessary. I never put her on her belly, I just did that one video. But then everyone was like, "Keep it up," so I put her on her stomach and she struggled and within a minute she pushed herself over and she had rolled onto her back in one swift push! I couldn't believe it! I don't know if babies normally do that at 4 or 5 weeks, but I thought it was really soon. I just think she's a really strong baby!
It's funny, getting to know Scarlet. Like already I'm picking out traits she's gotten from Greg and I. For instance. Since the beginning she has been the most mellow child. That, she got from Greg. I am far from mellow. She smiles a lot, this she got from me. I've always been a smiler. Greg smiles a lot too, but I smile way more than the average person, and she apparently smiles way more than the average baby. Her smiles also make me think she's happy! Which I think she has from me, not to say that Greg's not a happy person, but Greg has always said he loves how I'm a happy person. But when she IS upset, it is INSTANT. Like she will go from a content little baby to SCREAMING within a few seconds. There is NO wind up. I don't know if there are quiet cries or "growing in loudness" cries. Because she is either screaming at the top of her lungs, or not at all. THIS, unfortunately is from me. But, also, once the problem is fixed, she's a happy girl again. I am the same way. I can get mad pretty dang fast, but it goes away just as quickly. It's just amazing to see these traits in our baby already! Maybe I'm clueless and all babies are this way, but I don't think so.
Motherhood has been a journey. It's crazy to think I've only just begun. I can't believe she's already 5 weeks old. It still feels like we just brought her home yesterday. Everyone is always saying how small she is, but she's really grown a lot already. I'm so anxious to weigh her again. Motherhood has been waves of feeling like I'm awesome at it, and I'm impressed with my patience and then feeling completely inadequate and feeling bad for being a bad mother. Usually those feelings come in the night when it's 2 am and I've yet to lay down even once or 4 am and I'm desperate to go BACK to bed, but she is wide awake and wants to be held for a couple hours. Those are the hours that are difficult. Those are the times when I'm NOT so patient. But we're figuring it out. My pediatrician is BIG on schedules and I've been trying to get one down, but it's not really working. I think we can do it later, but for now she just can't do it and I'm finally ok with that. Man, there have been so many ups and downs, so many tears. The anxiety of everything new with the combination of complete lack of sleep has brought a lot of tears. I'll just burst into tears for no apparent reason sometimes. Usually there IS a reason, but it usually doesn't require me to cry about it. Greg's been really good about it. I have been reminded, once again, that I got a good one.
Well, I'm tired and I'm going to go. Good night!

Well Megs- sounds like you ARE an awesome mother! I feel sad that you ever feel like a bad one! I'm sure that every mother feels that way sometimes though. But seriously- you sound like you're awesome! I too, cut Grey's out of my life. And I seriously LOVED that talk you were talking about where they said you don't want to do things your kids shouldn't do/see. Definitely puts some perspective on your daily life. I love you so much! I am soooo excited to see you and Scarlet at the reunion:)
Have you read the book "Babywise"? It is a book all about schedules and how to make your baby sleep through the night. I use the techniques for Michael and they work great. I also used them for the foster kids, and my sister-in-laws used them for their kids. I would suggest you read it, and see if you can get it to work for you. If you have any questions about it, just email me and I will see if I can help you out.
She's still so little, so don't worry if she's not on a schedule yet...she will be. Just enjoy having her so little because it goes by too quick.
Getting no sleep turned me into a crazy person, it sounds like you are handling it better than me for sure. You are an awesome mom!!!
Thanks for posting!
Love you
good post. Conference really affected me to. It was so wonderful. love you!
The first few months can be so stressful. I feel way more stressed this time around than the first. Enjoy it now because when the second joins the family everything is thrown off and it becomes harder to get any type of quiet time. I seriously admire those with more than 2 kids now. How do they survive without going crazy. I can understand the lack of schedule and sleep right now. Brecken is just now getting on a regular/predible schedule. It can take time. I also hit a huge brick wall at 6am, his last feeding. It stinks and is so hard. What works for me is getting up to nurse and not really make eye contact or talk to him. I feed him, change his diaper if I need to and put him right back to bed. He quickly started figuring out nights and days. Now he just eats and goes right back to bed. He learned it is not awake time. You'll figure it out. As she starts spreading out her feedings and starts eating solids, that gets better as well. It all gets better but I too am still waiting for that. :) just enjoy this time that you do have while you can.
I loved conference, this time and all of the talks were wonderful. I got your card and thank you for loving the blankies. Maybe I will get some more made later. I think all of us try to be the best moms we can be. We all are human and it is so hard with a newborn. Sleep becomes the most precious thing that there is. Before you know it she will be 4 months old and then the time just seems to fly on by, so enjoy what you can. I love you all so much
I know you are a wonderful mother simply from how concerned you are about being an example. She's a lucky girl.
Don't worry about people saying how small she is. Everyone said that about my babies and mine were huge! All babies seem small because they are! I'm sure she is perfect and exactly how she is supposed to be.
I wish I could be there to lend a hand so could get a nap.
I love you and your beautiful baby.
You're doing so great Megan! No matter how many children you babysit or how often, or the amount of tips and advice you get, nothing can completely prepare you to having and raising YOUR OWN BABY! ;o) It's a whole new experience.
As far as schedules go--honestly, don't worry about it until she's closer to 3 months or so. It's next to impossible to get such a tiny, new baby on a schedule this young! Just do what works for you until things start settling into a schedule of their own. ;o) She sounds super mellow and easy, so I'm sure it won't be long before she starts settling into a routine.
I didn't start sleep training my babies until they were about 4 months old or so (by then they spread out their feedings and don't need as many during the night), and even then, Byron was a million times easier than Ayden.
Hope you can start getting some more sleep soon! Every mommy knows how you feel (Ayden still goes through cycles of waking up a bunch at night, and he's 2 and a half!), so don't worry about offending anyone if you're cranky! ;o) Hope I can meet sweet baby Scarlet soon.
I've been noticing traits that Mira got from one of us. Isn't it neat to see how much they take after parents?
Schedules. I remember Danica settled into a routine around 4 months with just a little coaxing. Mira did not EVER. I read a couple books about schedules like babywise and secrets of the baby whisperer. We decided this time around it was the anti of everything we believed in. haha.I felt differently about it when I had Danica though. I swear it was written just for babies like her. She took to it perfectly and quickly. It did not work for Mira at all! Mira still doesn't sleep well(she'll go to bed easy if one of us does too) but I think all the odd hours and sleepless nights paid off. She is sooo attached to me in a way that Danica simply is/was not. I LOVE it. And now we both get plenty of sleep. =)
Nursing. I felt like such a slave to nursing that I seriously considered not nursing the next one. Is that terrible? I'm sure I'll change my mind.
I haven't gotten to that talk yet about your kids seeing what you do. I think I'll go find it now. thanks!
Oh my goodness how did I not even know you were pregnant, let alone have a 5 week old now!!! She is a cutie! Congrats you guys! You will be great parents!
Hi! It sounds so hard to be a mother to a baby. And I think it is hard when I babysit Gracie! But it is. I am still a kid and I will get better and be a good mother like you someday. Love you and can't wait to see you and meet Scarlet! :)
Yeah. Amen. To all of it.
It is so unbelievable how little sleep you can actually live on. I remember so many times thinking, "This isn't possible. I shouldn't even be alive living on this little amount of sleep." And the husband feeling "so tired". Brother. That drives me nuts too. I try to brush it off, but sometimes I just can't. Elle is 8 months and she just barely started really sleeping through the night.
6 months is like a magic age. Things get easier. More enjoyable.
Love you so much. I know you're an amazing Mom.
that was great! I think you are doing so good! I think you nailed her personality. I think they come into the world with there basic personality. I noticed it more with Rebecca and Jake than the others. The others I noticed it more as they got to be toddlers. I think it's because I had my babies so fast there was alot going on and not much time to focus on one person. Conference is one of my favorite things, I always learn and am reminded of what is important. I also get great comfort. Conference is always the highlight of my 6 months. Sleep, yea I always felt ripped off. Heavenly Father helps us to manage, we have to. Love you!!! Thanks for posting.
time for a new pic of scarlet! love you!!
I enjoyed catching up on your blog!
One thing I have learned from having Austin, is that it is DEFINITLY easier the second time around. And, I don't say this because he is such a good baby. There is just so much less stress because you know what you are doing, I'm not constantly questioning myself, and I didn't have to deal with the endless soar nipples..ACK! You are a great mom, even if you don't always feel like it. These hormones can really mess with the mind!
We need to have you guys over for dinner soon!
