Ok, so you're either going to laugh, or think I'm really disgusting. Probably both. So last weekend we stayed with my Dad at the beach. We had a really good time. Now, Greg and I try to eat healthy, granted it's not a constant thing, but we try. My father, I realized this week- doesn't. And he was quite the influence. Everywhere we were, there were chocolate chips. I eat and think, "oh man I gotta stop" so I would. Next thing I knew Dad would pour a bowl full and hand them to me. I'd tell myself I'll just eat a few and then by the end of the conversation suddenly they were gone. This happened many times. Ok. This is the worst: Time for popcorn and a movie. I think to myself, "I've had a lot of sweets, lets eat the popcorn Mom eats (the healthier kind). " Dad sees what I grab and tells me, "Megan, you don't want that. That's not buttery enough."
I respond, "Oh Dad, it'll be fine. I think those others are too buttery. It coats my mouth."
"Megan, trust me. You don't want that. You want the good stuff." I tell him no and make my popcorn. The moment I put it in my mouth I am filled with regret and look longingly at my father's popcorn. I take a bite and exclaim, "Wow, this tastes just like movie popcorn!" I look at my popcorn and do not want it anymore. My Dad just kinda says, "I told you so." So here I am with a full bag of popcorn and I want Dad's. He tells me to make some more (of his) but I just couldn't waste it. So he laughs and tells me to melt butter and put it on. He tells me to use 1/2 a stick. I think he's insane. Way too much. So little by little, I end up using over 1/2 a stick. Once again, my Father is right. Then he tells me to put salt on it. "No Dad no! I don't want salt."
"Trust me Megan! Trust me!" I throw such a fit and finally let him sprinkle it on top and yes- he was right. Much better. So I'm ready to go now, buttery popcorn in hand and I think, "I wonder how many calories it is now?" So I take out the butter container and it says 100 calories. I think, oh that's not that bad. Then I realize it said 100 calories per tablespoon. Instant SHOCK. What have I DONE to this bowl of popcorn. I have just added 600 CALORIES IN BUTTER!!!!! Dad's popcorn was DEFINITELY less fatty than MINE now. So I look at my bowl in disgust and what do I do? I eat it.

Mmmmmm....Fooooood. LOL. Good story!
Oh Megs, I'm so glad you ate the good stuff. I can't handle healthy popcorn...the more butter the better!!!
Father knows best.
chocolate chips and buttered popcorn???? I can tell your mom was gone:) Oh well Megan you can eat healthy when you get home. Send me that pecan chocolate recipe that you had for your b-day. I love you grandma PS I always eat in a healthy way HEE! HEE! and I will turn into a pillar of salt next time you see me for lying.
That's an eye opener! Good thing I like my popcorn plain.
Lol I have had many of those nights, wait til you are pregnant like me. Then you really think you should care about the calories, yet for some reason just a small bowl of ice cream just isn't enough, you need a brownie and whipping cream on top, and don't forget the chocolate topping. Oh Megan you have always been a tiny thing a little extra here and there will never even show on our little frame!
Holy Cow! But YUMMY! I say, go for it!! As long as it's not every single night, of course...This definitely made me laugh -- next time don't bother looking to see how many calories something is when butter, or chocolate, or anything yummy is involved! ;)
This is so funny to me. I can TOTALLY see and hear the entire situation. I would've done the same thing. I love you!!!!
LOL.....Loved that story.....so funny! Your dad is hilarious, and your interior dialogue is awesome. I've never liked buttery popcorn since I worked at cinemark, cuz when we took out the garbage, it was filled with soda and popcorn, and the combo of the two, when they were all mixed inside the trash bag, was revolting. So, now I'm cured of popcorn, but if there is ANY candy around the house, it doesn't last long....tehe.
That is so funny because I can imagine the whole entire thing- that is so dad. I love it.
You are soooo funny! This cracked me up! I'm with your dad, though--screw the "healthy" popcorn, it tastes like cardboard to me! The yummy, buttery, greasy, salty stuff is the only way to go! Which is probably why I'll be 543lbs by the time I'm 30... :) he he!
Well, you can't let those calories go to waste, now can you?
Wow, I had a lot of blogs to catch up on. The food thing with Dad is a crack up, and I can totally picture it. That is definitely the Dad I know. The temple experiences sound wonderful. I'm happy for you that you married into such a righteous family. The beach trip sounds so fun. Bringing guests always makes you do more than normal, be more adventurous. I love you. Is Brussels in France? Is that why you are trying to learn french. That's how terrible my geography is! Love you.
I agree with Emily... father knows best. My dad would have done the same thing. He's all about chocolate and cookies and treats and i LOVE IT! it's like I justify myself when I'm eating it with my dad by saying that we're bonding or something hahaha! also, if you generaly eat healthy, then that was totally cool to take a little vacation! hahahaha, but the story was hilarious!!!! you're good at telling stories!! And I didn't think you were sick, because i TOTALLY would have done the same thing!
Nice story! I TRY to eat healthy - it seems to come and go in spurts, though - and usually it comes down to my level of exhaustion and the convience of the food I have on hand. Usually my healthy food needs some preparation, so I go with what is quick.
On the other hand, when it comes to popcorn, that is one of those things that if you're gonna have it, you gotta go for the 'real' stuff!
I know your parents (and you) just enough to be able to picture your story in my head - it was hilarious! :)
Hey Megsy. I missed your call the other day only because I was working through lunch that day! What are the odds. Anyway, I hate that I am always missing your calls. I will try and give you a call one of these days during lunch. I love you!!!!!!
Wow, I haven't looked at anyone's blog in a WHILE. You have so many posts! Your story about Dad is so hilarious. I can picture every bit of it and especially the looks on his face when he would say those things.
I love the post with you being tagged. I laughed at where you would change your clothes at. Your talking about the blue church on Janus, right?? = ) So funny.
that was hilarious!! welcome to my life! The only difference is that he doesn't try to convince me to eat his food anymore. It has taken until the last few weeks to do that!!
hahahaha tha's really funny! i can just imagine your dad and it really makes me laugh! But you're right....it tastes way better but it does coat your mouth with wierdness!
That is HILARIOUS. Now I want popcorn. Seriously, someone mentions popcorn or I smell it, it's over. I will go and make some as soon as I'm done commenting.
I don't get a chance to check out your blog very often but now I see you're leaving. Who is going to cut my hair the Paul Mitchell way??? I know I'm picky, but it's gotta 'work' each morning. Sarah's been doing it cuz I've been lucky enough to see them lately but then what? You will be missed. I hope you enjoy your adventure immensely. I'll check your blog every now and again. ~Karen Knerr
