I'm going to be a vegetarian forever. Anytime someone scares me away from the lifestyle (like when I go to the doctor) I go look it up online and am immediately flooded with information, of study after study- how what I'm doing is the best thing for my body! It's not so much about meat as it is about milk.

I have a new friend who is a general practitioner- or was before she moved here- and the first thing she says to me when I tell her we don't drink milk is, "Where do your kids get their calcium?" I cringe inside. I want to say, "Where does YOUR kid get calcium? Trust me, it's not from his sippy cup!" But I just mumble, "Spinach and other things. We eat healthy." And then we pass through the awkwardness.

Every time we go to the doctor I go through this. But usually I just omit that we don't drink milk and they go ON and ON and ON about my kids calcium needs and they get it the most through MILK. And I just nod my head and think, "Whatever, I'm not going to do this."

But today we went to the doctor, and I actually really really liked him. Brighton has hardly gained any weight since we moved, though he's definitely grown in height, he's just getting skinnier. I was a little worried, but he said all we need to do is up his calories and he sees it all the time. Kids get more active but eat the same amount so they lose weight.

Then we had a major talk of milk. And for the first time, because I was a little more vocal, he sensed my "against-ness", for lack of a better word, and he just plain asked me. So I told him that we limit dairy because I think it's bad for our health. Or something. But he went on and on and ON about calcium and bone growth and osteoporosis and how NOW is the time. That kids build all these things in their bodies NOW and it's not later. Later is too late. He went on forever and was starting to convince me- not to go CRAZY, but to have them eat more dairy.

I went home feeling convinced but strange. Then I thought, "I've researched a lot. That's how I came to our diet, now. But I feel confused and can't remember all the reasons why now." So I went to my lovely computer and started reading.

And I learned some new things.

95% of your calcium is IN your bones. It's already there. You LOSE calcium, when you pee, poo, sweat, and something else. The best way to keep your bones is to lose LESS calcium, not GAIN more. Eat calcium rich foods, go outside and get vitamin D so your body will ABSORB it, but it's really about RETAINING calcium that's really gonna get you somewhere. Guess how you retain it? Stay away from animal products. Protein rich foods make acid happen in your body and your body take calcium to neutralize it and then you pee it all out and lose that calcium. So if you eat less protein, you lose less calcium. So if you eat a lot of meat or chug a lot of milk, your body is using up a lot of it's calcium.

I never knew this. So fascinating.

Before I knew this, I was convinced by the studies. Countries and cultures that eat consume the least animal protein have the lowest rates of osteoporosis and all us westerners have the highest. So it kinda makes your brain go "Duh!" but now I have some science behind it.

So immediately I felt relief and decided to stay with our diet. Which is between a veggie and a vegan. We eat eggs, cheese and yogurt. But less and less eggs and cheese as time passes. So I guess we're more like veggies who don't drink milk. ANYWAY.

Above all this, for me- it just feels right. I feel in my heart this is what we're supposed to do. The only times I go against it, is if I think my kids aren't getting enough calories and are starving and they just need something fast, so they don't starve while I prepare a meal.

INTERESTING. One article I read said that SOUR CREAM and YOGURT (good yogurt) are not acidic and therefor, your body isn't losing calcium from consuming them. So there you go. Yogurt is apparently good for you. I have no idea what's in the yogurt we're eating- it's definitely not sweetened!

Anyway, blah blah. I found it all very interesting and I hadn't researched food since we moved and it was a little exhilarating. If I were to go back to school I would major in nutrition. I love it.

Side note- after our little discussion about food and health, we sit outside the doctor's and I give the kids chocolate, because they just had shots and I thought, "If the doctor sees me stuffing their faces with chocolate after I said I was hesitant about giving them flouride, I'm going to feel like an idiot." I never said I was perfect.

Greg and I came across this (he loves Ted Talks on Netflix) and I just LOVED IT. Quick, to the point and I thought he said a lot with few words. This is basically our lifestyle and I wish everyone would do it. It's only a few minutes and I think it's a genius idea.

By the way- this isn't me trying to convince everyone to be vegetarian or anything. I was just a little exasperated at my doctor visit and needed to vent my thoughts a little.

I LOVED this post so much. I HATE HATE HATE it when doctors and people are obsessed with calcium!!!! My theory, (though I do not follow it) is eat like the bible days. It just drives me crazy when doctors and people want to force us to eat all these things that weren't available to people in the olden days, I always want to say- so what did they do back then??? How come they all survived and lived longer then us? They didn't worry about calcium! And then there's the FAT intake- switching over to 2% at age 2, because they shouldn't be drinking something with SO much fat- ugh. It all just drives me insane. I just try to feed maddie healthy, and I try to do what's realistic and easy. And I totally get the milky when they're hungry, it's such an easy go to thing, when they're waiting for you finish making dinner etc. I'm trying to think of things to replace it, just so that's not her ONLY source of snack filler! I don't know anything about these things, I have done NO research, so I knwo nothing about meat or milk, but it really freaks me out when you talk like this cause i love meat! ha. But i've just heard so many things from different sources elluding to it's "badness", so I've just decided I'm going to finish our beef out, and then MAYBE maybe do some research if I'm healthy and happy, ha- cause i know i might become obsessed, and so I need to be stable to study it-ha. I admire you for caring so much about you and your family's health, and studying it out so well. I'm afraid if i do, I will become disturbed, and I have such a hard time thinking of what to make for dinner, I'm afraid I REALLY won't know what to make if I cut out things. I laughed so hard at the part when you said you gave them chocolate and you were afraid of the doc seeing you. I often wonder what my friends think, bc I'm strict about certain things, but then- i'll totally give maddie a chocolate chip cookie. ha. that is REALLY interesting what you shared about calcium. I just feel like doctors are so corrupt. My midwife friend totally lies at doctor appointments because she said it's just not worth the arguing. She lies about all the culturally accepted ideas and says she does all of them- like- putting her baby on her back, etc. and she totally puts her on her tummy- ha. I love you.

I haven't watched the video yet but am going to after I comment. That's really interesting information about the whole retaining calcium and the connection with meat. I am with you- I really do feel like your diet is healthiest, but unlike you, it's just too hard for me to figure out right now. You are so inspiring! It's good to know quality yogurt isn't too bad...it doesn't make much sense to me but maybe it's the live cultures that are good for us. I make my own yogurt, and just started using whole non-homogenized milk from a local dairy farm- that comes to my house the day that it is milked from the cow! And then I made the yogurt the very night I got the milk. So I'm hoping that means the yogurt is the highest quality it can be. ANYway- if this Lyme thing has taught me anything, it's sure taught me that I do NOT trust doctors, and I do NOT trust the government and it's recommendations for anything. There is so much politics and money in everything, the push for dairy is all about money. I don't BLAME the doctors for not realizing this since their colleges teach them that, but I know the best thing to do is to research myself, use common sense, and use my gut feeling. Which sounds like exactly what you're doing. Love you- you are such an inspiration!

Hey Meg - nice post(This is Jeff)
Every doctor will agree that having a vegetarian diet is a good alternative to the typical American diet of no veggies and processed garbage. I just wanted to chime in on the calcium part. You don't need to drink a ton of milk to get calcium. The spinach and other items you guys are eating in your diet help and are good sources. If they drink any kind of juice like OJ, you can get it calcium-fortified (I know, all juice has tons of sugar which is why I personally would go for the milk). The thing about calcium is they wouldn't harp on it if it wasn't super important. I'm not saying you have to drink milk, but it is a fallacy to think that you can stop the calcium from leaving your bones. That is the way the human body works. It's a lot like calories...You cannot get your body to stop burning through them - you have to replenish them daily. Calcium is the same, especially during the time where the bones mature (ie childhood). While they are maturing and 'calcifying' they need all the calcium they can get to properly calcify. I don't think the doctors are trying to be know-it-alls...I think they are just trying to look out for your kiddos.
I think there are calcium chewables that would do the trick as well that you could find.
Please continue to fight the hesitation to not give them fluoride :)...It is literally the BEST thing you could ever do for their teeth - of course at the proper dosage.

I think you are so right on the money Megan, every time I take a calcium supplement my joints hurt worse. I do know that I eat yogurt the greek kind with the live cultures, it works for me. That is the only one that doesn't upset my stomach, I suffer from IBS and if I eat too much wheat and dairy I have more problems. So I think you are right. Hugs and Kisses
